SMTube

posted Aug 16, 2015, 6:00 AM by Centrych Administrator

The latest version of SMTube is a complete rewrite due Google releasing a new YouTube API that the previous version of SMTube was not compatible with. The biggest change with this release is that developers can no longer provide download functionality within their program for YouTube videos.

Because SMTube is configurable, you can restore download capability by following the directions posted here.

Openclipart

posted Jul 21, 2015, 4:14 AM by Jack Radigan

This package has been re-released for compatibility with recent versions of LibreOffice.

The clipart gallery in LibreOffice had name collisions with a couple of directories in this package, which would prevent the package from being installed. The change in this release appends a "-oc" to each clipart directory in the package so that you can view both from the LibreOffice gallery.

The openclipart2 package has been removed since it does not add any other art and also organizes the clipart by author instead of subject.

LibreOffice 4.4.4 (again)

Had to rebuild it once again due to another dependency problem.

Update Manager should (hopefully) no longer complain during an update.

LibreOffice 4.4.4

Had to rebuild the base package due to a dependency regression with the python-uno sub-package.

If the Update Manager complains about this execute the following commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f install

Once completed, the Update Manager tool should function normally again.

Migration Phase 2 Complete

posted Jul 5, 2015, 5:56 AM by Jack Radigan

All existing packages have been migrated to the Release repository.

The other change is how LibreOffice is tracked.  Previously, the LibreOffice project offered 3 releases; conservative, stable, and current.  They now only maintain 2 releases for download; Fresh and Still.  For Centrych, the Still release will be located in the Release repository while the Fresh version will be available in the Updates repository.  The current versions available are:

Release:     4.3.7
Updates:    4.4.4

Migration Phase 1 Complete

posted Jul 3, 2015, 3:32 PM by Jack Radigan

With the first phase of the migration complete, LibreOffice 4.3.7 is now available in the upgrades repository.

To make room for this release the packages that were in the updates repository have been migrated to the main repository.  Similarly, the packages in upgrades were moved to the updates repository.

Once the request for additional storage to the main repository is done the second phase of the migration can take place.

The Road Ahead

posted Jul 3, 2015, 1:19 PM by Jack Radigan

Although this project isn't dead, it's certainly been on life support for too long due to commitments of job and family.  Because of some fortunate scheduling at work I'll have sufficient free time over the next few months to again focus some attention to moving Centrych along.

My immediate plan, within the next few weeks, is to release 12.04.4, which will include LibreOffice 4.4, as well as several other updated packages.  To make room for this release, all current update and upgrade packages will be migrated over to the release repository this weekend.  While I expect that to be a transparent move, please email me if you encounter any problems.

Once that's finished, my goal is to get the 14.04 release completed in the early to mid Fall timeframe so that I can free up some cycles to dig in and learn the ins and outs of Ubuntu's Mir, Wayland, and the still controversial systemd.

As noted previously, LibreOffice classifies their latest release, 4.2.x in this case, as suitable for early adopters and private power users.  The 4.1.x series is now classified as suitable for all users while the 3.6.7 release remains as suitable for extra-conservative use.

Security Tools, Wireshark and IDSUtil

A new sub-project for Centrych as part of the first beta release for a tool that I've been working on for the past few months.

The IDSUtil package is a set of tools that provides database maintenance and pcap file processing to support a plugin that provides you with the ability to view Snort and Suricata IDS alerts within Wireshark. An overview of the tool and demo of the plugin can be viewed here.

The Security Tools webpage is available from the main menu and here.
